Perioscopy – Healing Through A Better Vision

Perioscopy (also known as dental endoscopy) is a procedure that uses a miniature dental endoscope with advanced video, lighting, and magnification technology that enables us to diagnose and treat areas below the gumline non-surgically.

Our hygienists use a miniature camera attached to a tiny probe and gently place it below the gumline. The images are immediately displayed on a chairside video screen for your clinician and you to see. The dental endoscope provides up to 48 times magnification, disclosing minute details under the gums that, before the advent of this technology, might easily be missed.

The Perioscopy’s high definition camera and display allows the clinician to perform sub-gingival ultrasonic, endoscopic debridement that is more effective and can prevent the need for surgery. The pressurized water delivery system keeps the field clean for optimal visibility and can also be used with disinfecting irrigants.

The miniature scope is placed inside anatomically designed probes that are gently held beneath the surface, while the magnified image is displayed, live, on the monitor. Periodontal debridement is performed in each quadrant using the displayed image as a guide. This approach is optimal for both clinician and patient, with less pain, more effective results, and less chair time than surgery.

As a minimally invasive, non-surgical alternative, Perioscopy is indicated for patients needing initial therapy, or as a follow up to their initial treatment. It can also be used for maintenance of chronically inflamed pockets or pockets increasing in depth, as well as to aid in the detection of subgingival caries, root fractures, resorption, or perforations. Recovery for patients is usually only 24-48 hours with minimal discomfort that can be treated with over the counter pain medication.

Hygiene Visit With Periodontal Disease

For patients with periodontal disease, hygiene visits with Desert Breeze Dental can provide a variety of treatment and maintenance options. The three steps in treating periodontal disease involves diagnosis, determining a plan, then scaling and root planning in conjunction with laser therapy. Then the dentist will recommend a 3 or 4 month re-care program for you to maintain oral health. There are also various rinses and/or toothpastes your dental professional will prescribe or recommend. Home care is very important and goes hand-in-hand with following the recommended hygiene visits in the office.

Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry is one of the most useful tools that we offer for patients who experience dental phobia, anxiety, a strong gag reflex, extremely sensitive teeth or difficulty with Novocain. Patients opting for sleep dentistry receive medication that puts them in a very relaxed, stress-free state. Patients often have little or no recollection of their appointment. It is important that patients using this option arrange reliable transportation to and from their appointments.

Conscious Sedation

The simplest form of sedation is nitrous oxide, which is delivered through a facemask and takes effect in about 20 seconds. Patients feel very relaxed and often drift into a state of light sleep. As soon as the procedure is over, oxygen is administered and the effects diminish. There are no after effects and no recovery time is needed.
